Tom Mcevoy
Tom McEvoy is a professional poker player. Tom McEvoy was born on November 14, 1944 at Grand Rapids in Michigan. His grandmother initiated him into the game of poker at the age of five. Thereafter, he and his brothers would play poker amongst themselves and with boys from the neighborhood too.
Tom is a graduate from Ferris State University. He was working as an accountant. However, he lost his job due to his erratic attendance and lack of interest and commitment towards his job. Thereafter, he became a poker professional in 1978. Tom continues to play poker even today.
Tom McEvoy’s first win came in 1983 world series of poker main event. His match with Rod Peate was the longest heads-up battle in the history of WSOP until 2006. Tom McEvoy has played against every WSOP main event winner. Tom McEvoy has another first to his credit. He was the first main event winner to get in through a satellite tournament.
Tom McEvoy has co-authored and authored various books on poker. Some of his co-authors include leading poker players like Brad Daugherty, T. J. Cloutier, Max Stern, and Don Vines. His popular books include How to Win at poker tournaments, Tournament Poker, Championship omaha, Championship No-Limit, and Pot-Limit Hold 'em, and Championship Hold 'em with TJ Cloutier, and Championship Stud with Max Stern and Linda Johnson. His books cover various topics ranging from hands and money management, general poker strategy, reading players, and understanding the game from a higher and distinct level too.
Tom is a columnist for Card Player Magazine for more than eight years and a representative of PokerStars.com too. Tom’s total live tournament earnings as of 2006 are more than US$2,500,000.
Tom McEvoy strongly opposes smoking. He helped organize a first poker tournament without smoking in 1998. Although many players opposed the move, attendance was high. This started trend of nonsmoking tournaments. Similarly, Tom convinced Benny Binion Behnen to make World Poker Series a nonsmoking tournament. Tom then agreed to give poker lessons to Benny Binion.
